Noworm - Home Noworm - The end of the worm

It is often the case that, although you obtain your pet's worm treatment from your vet, you will need to administer the product yourself. Here's a few tips to help you -

  • Tablets and granules can be given to the animal hidden in food. Choose your pet's favourite or try something a little different like pilchards in tomato sauce - many cats love it!

  • If you can't convince your pet to eat tablets then it will be necessary to give the tablet directly. It's much easier if you have someone to help you to do this. One person should hold the pet still, restraining the front leg/paws whilst the other person opens the mouth. Tilt the pet's head as far back as possible so that the tablet can be dropped onto the back of the tongue. Close the pet's mouth and hold the muzzle shut whilst gently stroking the throat until the animal has swallowed the tablet.

  • Some wormers are supplied in liquid form in order to make it easier to give to young animals. Firstly draw up the dose into the syringe then hold the puppy in such a way that you have control of its head. Place the syringe into the corner of the pup's mouth and gently expel the liquid. Do not squirt the dose forcefully into the back of the mouth, as it is likely to be returned just as forcefully accompanied by its last meal! Pastes should be given in a similar way.

  • If you have difficulty administering the treatment, we would suggest that you contact your veterinary surgery to ask if one of the veterinary nurses/technicians would show you the best way to treat your pet.

  • Most wormers are given according to weight. You can either take your pet to your veterinary surgery or you can weigh it at home. The easiest way to do it at home is to hold the animal in your arms whilst you are on the scales and then subtract your own weight from the total.
