How does my pet become infected?
Ingestion of larvae
A. caninum, A. tubaeforme&A. braziliense - skin penetration
A. caninum - via mother's milk
U. stenocephala larvae do penetrate the skin but do not go on to reach maturity
Signs
A. caninum and tubaeforme cause most severe signs, others of much less clinical importance.
Adults - skin problems on feet due to migration of larvae, anaemia, respiratory problems and lethargy in heavy infections.
Juveniles - similar signs to above although the anaemia can be severe and is usually accompanied by bloody diarrhoea.
Warnings
People can be affected by larvae penetrating the skin, especially in cases involving A. braziliense and less frequently with U. stenocephala.
